The internet has an infinite number of articles that underline the importance of taking breaks from your desk. (‘Infinite’ is no exaggeration.)
All provide a logical case for stepping away from our work to connect with colleagues (over lunch?), commence light exercise (go for a walk?), or take a mental health break (read a novel?).
But still… we don’t do these things…
…Why???
The answer: culture. Our workplace needs to continually reinforce these important habits.. the key word being “continually”. Humans will always trend towards:
- busyness
- looking busy
- guilt
New office rule for the week: For the next 5 days, no eating at your desk!
